A line of black stones, known as black lava, and the expanse of gravel resulting from the volcanic activity of Mount Purba Batur have become increasingly popular destinations for travelers. Especially for adrenaline junkies and off-roaders visiting Bali.

This destination is located in the tourist area of Mount Batur, South Batur Village, Kintamani, Bangli Regency, which is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN) or a world UNESCO geopark.

This destination is known as Black Lava Mount Batur, named after its origin – formed from the lava flows of Mount Batur, which have solidified into black rock.

Now, this area has become one of the most visited destinations, particularly by adrenaline enthusiasts and off-road enthusiasts. This is understandable, given that the place, also known as Lava Tumuli Batur, offers exciting challenges while enjoying the iconic beauty of Mount and Lake Batur.

Off-road enthusiasts can explore the slopes of Mount Batur in a 4WD jeep via the Black Lava trail or use trail bikes. Nature lovers can opt for hiking.

Black Lava is located at Position 3 and is managed by the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA). The terrain is quite challenging, with sharp rocks and stretches of black sand hills, making it accessible only to off-road vehicles.

Moreover, there are several other spots in Black Lava Mount Batur that adventurers enjoy. These include large black rocks with Mount Batur as a backdrop and several gazebos for resting.

And, of course, the main attraction that lures tourists to this destination is the sunrise at Mount Batur. “If you want to go off-road, the best time is in the morning to avoid the heat,” says Ketut Antonius, an off-road enthusiast.

It’s not just local residents or domestic tourists; many foreign travelers also explore various trails in the ancient volcanic Mount Batur area. “Some go cycling, use trail bikes, and off-road vehicles. Others simply hike and trek on foot,” he explains.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bangli Regency, I Ketut Mardjana, notes that Black Lava Batur has almost no competitors because of its unique and rare combination. “There are unique photo spots with striking rocks, and the challenging terrain adds to the allure,” he says.

Furthermore, during the journey, tourists are treated to the breathtaking scenery of lava, mountains, the lake, and fresh air. “This combination makes Mount Batur an object of extraordinary attraction,” he adds.

Creating Diversity in the Favorite Proclamation Area

Kintamani and natural beauty go hand in hand. The charm of the district in the administrative area of Bangli Regency has been recognized for a long time, especially Lake and Mount Batur.

In fact, Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, frequently visited the northern part of Denpasar. During his visits, he often stayed at the now-remembered Hotel Pelni.

Many prominent figures have chosen to settle there, including renowned author Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana. He once lived in Toya Bungkah Village, and his residence has now become the STA Toya Bungkah Art Center.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Kintamani has evolved into a tourist area. The Black Lava Danau Batur adrenaline test is one of several tourist attractions that have sprung up there.

Now, this district is one of Bali’s leading destinations, offering a one-stop destination theme. “Because everything is in Kintamani,” says I Ketut Mardjana, Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bangli Regency.

There are countless tourist attractions to enjoy in Kintamani, from the beauty of the sunrise, Mount Batur, religious tourism, Lake Batur, Black Lava, and much more. Even the supporting facilities for tourism have become more varied. “This makes the tourist destinations in Kintamani grow even more,” explains the former CEO of PT Pos Indonesia.

Additionally, the government has developed various infrastructure to support the development of tourist destinations in Kintamani. “Coupled with the extraordinary creativity of the community,” he adds.

Now, as the tourism industry in Kintamani continues to flourish, the focus should be on preserving nature. “In essence, damaging nature harms the community itself. Nature must be protected and preserved. This will also preserve the attractiveness of Kintamani,” he concludes.
